educators and supervisors need to to address the speci c c c c c c c c c concepts where con con dentiality can be breached if one is not careful For example a a a a a a a a a a a a private practice’s social media page reveals the the address of the the practice practice A client who is seeking counseling due to to Intimate Partner Violence checks in in in to to the the site or just follows the the page Their partner sees this action and investigates the the practice showing up one day to confront the the counselor and/or client Or a a a a a a a a CIT who works works for an an an an an agency that works works predominantly with sexual and/or gender minorities and and a a a a a a a a a a a client who has not revealed their orientation or or or identity to family likes the the the page and is therefore unintentionally outed With regards to to seeking referrals CITs are taught to to consult colleagues However these referral referral requests tend to be client based based rather than counselor based based based Listservs and such are great resources for for CITs to to make referrals but a a a a a a a a a a a client-based referral referral too much identifying information can be shared Whereas a a a a a a a a counselor-orientated referral protects client con dentiality It is very di erent to ask for a a a a a a a a counselor who specializes in in adolescent depression in in Plano TX than to ask for for a a a a a a a a a a a a a a referral for for a a a a a a a a a a a a a a 15 year old African American male who who has self-harming behavior and and major depression who who is is moving from Chicago to live with his his grandparents in in Plano TX after the the death of his his mother Counselor educators need to to to to prepare students to to to to address potential risks (and bene ts) to to to to social media interaction During intro and and ethics courses as well as as as during practicum and and internship students are asked to consider informed consent Social media needs to to be a a a a a major topic of informed consent conversations Whether one engages or or or does not engage engage professionally through social media informed consent documentations and conversations should address social media interactions or lack thereof Clients need to be made aware of of of the the the lack of of of interaction interaction or how interaction interaction on on on on social social media will
be conducted and what the the expectations are regarding access to social social media pro les For example a a a a a a a a a a a a a client allows a a a a a a a a a a a a a CIT access to to to their Instagram feed in order to to to understand what is important to to to to the the the client client The client client expects the the the CIT CIT to to access it it whenever it it is convenient however the the the CIT CIT only intends to to to access during the the session Counselor educators need to to to begin helping students address these expectations and considerations with future clients Social media is not the the only conversation about the the new digital digital age In an an ever-evolving digital digital culture counselor educators and supervisors need to to also begin discussing the utilization of technology from an an an intervention standpoint In techniques intro intro and and theories courses students are introduced to to to to a a a a a plethora of tools and techniques to to to to utilize to to to to help their clients bene t t t t t t t t t t t t t t from counseling Students and and supervisees are taught to to be be culturally integrative and and and sensitive to to communicate
